Manhood Peninsula Competition

THEMED COMPETION

9TH SEPTEMBER 2024

For the first of two competitions in the Autumn section of the programme we were tasked with providing images taken in the area known as the Manhood Peninsula. Judging by the images submitted we should have defined the area a little more closely.  So, what is the Manhood Peninsula?  I could see no reference on my Ordnance Survey Explorer map covering the Selsey area. Google references numerous articles which describe the Manhood Peninsula as a large peninsula of land with the English Channel in the south and Chichester to the north. The name is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon, maene-wudes, meaning common land. Moving on if your image was shot south of Chichester and before you fell into the English Channel you probably complied with the spirit of the competition.

Tim West was our Judge for the evening. We were warned in advance by our Chairman, Pony, that Tim did not like to see much white in the sky. For the intermediates it was back to the cropping option, but for the advanced group there was always the option of changing the sky during editing. For this competition both groups were judged together, giving a wide score from 6 to the maximum of 10. There were several tens and three were judged as first, second, and third. While it is nice to be in the first three, I always feel this is not the main point of a competition. Listening to the comments of an experienced photographer and learning from them is how we progress as a photographer. Even if we do not always agree with the comments listening to them helps us analyze our images in a critical way. Photography is a mix of science, the technical aspects of digital photography and art, the creative aspects of the image. Both need to come together to form a successful image.
