OUT-DOOR SHOOT 22 JULY 2024
For our first outdoor shoot of the summer season (what summer you may well ask) the topic was textures and patterns in photography, an evening meeting. For someone who tends to point and shoot, far too often, the first question was what this has to do with photography. Fortunately, Pony, our Chairman came to the rescue with a hand-out on Pattern and Texture in Modern Photography. A great 5-minute read, highly recommended. It shows the importance of patterns and textures in photography and gives several tips for beginner photographers.
The weather on the night was a long way from a summer’s evening but members got on with the job in hand and were soon looking for patterns on and around the Church. We then moved into Selsey. Clearly the exercise made you observe the buildings in much more detail and gave food for thought as to how you could incorporate this into your compositions. Like using your camera, it obviously needs to become second nature, and for most of us a lot more practice will be needed.
By the time we had worked our way through Selsey we had a good idea about recording patterns, but texture of the surface was much more difficult, although I am sure the experts among us made great use of the changing light conditions. For those of us at the other end of the spectrum we clearly have a lot of work to do to fully understand what can be achieved with Textures and Patterns.
It was all too soon to call it a day and what better place than a swift half at the local hostelry.
